Going on the road again... after a year of life's transitions and pursuing other interests, I am privileged to have the opportunity to speak at MYGOSSCON 2011 next week.
The title of my paper is "Key Trends: Challenges, Opportunities and Leverage for Linux/OSS Ecosystem". I look forward to the discussions it will generate. :)
Personally, I am looking forward to this with excitement as I have been granted the latitude in content creation. I will be approaching the topic from another angle and with, what I hope to be, a fresh perspective.

Speaking at MOSC 2010: SUSE Studio & Mono
Doing my bit to help advertise about the upcoming Malaysia Open Source Conference (MOSC) 2010 happening next week (29 June - 1 July 2010). I will be speaking on the topic of SUSE Studio and Mono on the second day.

I have just completed installing SUSE Studio OnSite on my Thinkpad T61p over the weekend. Granted, I could use the freely available SUSE Studio on the Internet/WWW but I want to avoid any connectivity and bandwidth issues that usually dogged live presentations with demos. Doing my best to beat Murphy's law.
The whole process of installing & bringing SUSE Studio up was fairly smooth & straight forward. The only reason it took the whole weekend has more to do with downloading the various codebases (SLES 10, SLES 11, SLED 11) and their respective 32bit & 64bit repositories via the Subscription Management Tool (SMT) than getting the actual SUSE Studio app to work. Of course, it also helps to know one of the Senior Software Engineer behind it. This is a nod (and wink) to James Tan for providing good advise over email/IM, thus reducing my trial-n-error in customizing this specifically for MOSC. Thank you.
Over the next couple of days, I will be creating 2-3 appliances and prepping for demo walk-throughs. I will also be mucking about with some .NET webapp with Visual Studio and having it work on SLES 11 with Mono Extension. Hope to find the time to blog/document about it.

SUSE Meetup: SLES 11 on IBM System p
I attended the monthly SUSE meetup group here in Singapore last night. The highlight of the evening is a walkthrough and demo of installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 on IBM System p (POWER) by Mike Veltman, our SUSE meetup lead and our talent from Holland. 
Antarius is an authorised IBM Training partner and has a number of IBM System p5 in their training centre. Mike is a SUSE and AIX consultant with Antarius.
Pictures of the very familiar IBM Hardware Management Console (aka HMC) managing a number of LPARs running AIX and SLES 11... and even openSUSE 11.1!! .... which requires a hack and not officially supported... but Mike does it because he can... as usual...
It was a good turn out despite the change in the usual venue... we had a good mix of geeks/experts from various fields and we had a good time exchanging views and information till 10pm.
Mike educates us with his usual enthusiasm about the design merits of the System p in how it handles virtualization, management and pooling of hardware resources. For those who were early (ahem, me included), he showed how we can dynamically assign virtual CPUs and RAM to a running SLES 11 and it works!
Looking forward to the next meetup.

I was at Computex 2009 too!
Yup, I was there from 3-6 June earlier this month... due to my traveling schedule and procrastination, well... mostly procrastination, I end up posting this "me too" post 2 days before the end of June.
Anyway, I hereby present some SUSE highlights, photos and a video of the event from my perspective:
1) With our close collaboration with Intel on Moblin, we are 1 of 2 software vendors allowed to have a booth on the traditionally hardware vendor ONLY show floor.
2) On display are SUSE Studio (beta) and a whole string of Netbooks from Acer, MSI and ASUS loaded with openSUSE 11.1 with Moblin GUI. Really sweet!
3) I found some time to go up to the 83 or 85th floor on the famous Taipei 101... what a view of the city!
4) Finally, a picture of all the hardworking Novell folks (hackers, managers, sales, marketing) who pulled this first-of-its-kind presence at Computex. Also in the picture are attractive promoters and a dude who was in a Geeko suit.
Speaking of mascots, here is a video of a Computex mascot mixing it up with our SUSE Geeko... looks like we'll need to hire the guy (or gal) in the Computex mascot to our Geeko suit for next year... Enjoy!

The SLE 11 Community Preview in Singapore
The SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 community preview in Singapore was held last Wednesday evening (22nd April, 7pm). Well... we really got started at 7:30pm as we were chatting away and waiting for some of the regulars to arrive. Darrel and Mike did a fantastic job organizing and getting the word out. Thank you! 
I'm looking forward to visiting the next community SUSE meetup in May and also supporting Darrel in Singapore's Software Freedom Day in September.
We had slightly over 35 people turn up and spent slightly over an hour (initially planned 45minutes) on my presentation and demo. I was delighted at the questions and discussions, a real lively session. This was followed by some light snacks sponsored by Novell.

OSSPAC 2009
I was at the Open Source Singapore Pacific-Asia Conference (OSSPAC) and had the privilege to share the Novell SUSE story at their keynote event yesterday (17th Feb 2009).
In the afternoon, while walking through the various vendor and partner exhibits, I came across these two fellas and just had to take a picture with them... from left to right: The Duke, MySQL Dolphin and me with SUSE Geeko in tow.

- The Novell SUSE history and how SUSE is gaining more than 5000 new customers for Novell in 2007 alone... and growing revenue at 38% from 2006 to 2007 and from 2007 to 2008. We are growing SUSE at a higher rate than the Linux market at 22% year on year
- All these are possible with the strong support from Novell partner ecosystem and it includes our strategic relationships with IBM, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Intel and AMD
- SUSE is important but not the only open source story at Novell. I picked Mono/Moonlight and SUSE Studio as some of the projects that Novell is investing in and hoping to yield fruits down the line
- Mono success at Unity3D and FusionFall MMORPG (other success stories)
- Moonlight bringing equality to Firefox users for President Obama's inauguration
- SUSE Studio and how partners can create custom Linux application appliances in multiple format (disk image, VMware and Xen)... and its still in Alpha!

IDC Green IT Conference in Malaysia & Singapore
IDC's Green IT Conference is doing its round in Asia and I had the privilege to speak at the Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Singapore event last week.
Update (20th Aug 2008): Found another blog entry that summarizes the KL event. I'm very delighted to see the key messages of my session have been communicated and captured by an attendee. There is even a link to my entire presentation online. Thank you Brandon.

The Penguins & Geeko setup at the Novell booth... they told everyone to drop their business card and stand a chance to go home with one of these endangered animals... saving the planet.... The next picture is Novell and their partners at work talking to prospective clients and finally, the main hall where the conference takes place... nice green theme... feels right at home for SUSE.
The event in Singapore has a similar green theme... that's me working hard to setup my 2 Thinkpad demo before the crowd comes in, the crowd listening to my presentation/demo and yours truly on stage talking about Green IT, power consumption, floor space, virtualization... blah blah blah...
